The Freddie Books Series

Welcome to the world of Training Freddie, the latest heartfelt adventure from Carlita Kosty, beloved author of The Freddie Books series—where love comes in unexpected packages, often covered in fur and armed with sassy observations about your life choices.

Step into Merle and Freddie’s world—you might just find yourself looking at your own four-legged friend a little differently.

Book Description

Recently widowed middle school teacher Merle McKinney is looking for love, so she adopts a rescue dog, a terrier she names Freddie. Freddie, however, realizes early on that Merle is the one in need of rescue. Merle’s life-changing, outrageous adventures as she searches for a man to call her own are accompanied by Freddie’s running commentary and sage doggie advice. Will Merle find The One? Does Freddie know more than he’s saying?

Set in San Antonio and Copano Beach, Texas, Merle and Freddie’s improbable, and often hilarious story explores the awkwardness of senior dating, the indignities of aging, and the joys of love in all its incarnations.

Merle’s Rules for a Happy Life

  • Never walk when you can ride.
  • Never stand when you can sit.
  • Never pass up an opportunity to use the restroom or get a drink of water.
  • And rub your doggie’s tummy every day.

Freddie, on the other hand, follows his hero Snoopy’s philosophy: “Anything that falls on the floor is legally mine.”

Excerpt From Page 1

I knew the minute I laid eyes on her she was the sweet sucker for me. “Well, you’re a cute little fella’,” she said, leaning over and looking at me sideways through the door of my temporary cage in the puppy pavilion. That was Saturday; I’d been there since Wednesday night, not my first visit. And I’m NOT a puppy!

She had THE KID with her. “Grandma, let’s take him out in the play yard and see if he likes us.” Really glad to be free at last, I raced around the fence about fifteen times, then stood there, panting, checking them out. Who WERE these people? The Kid was tall and skinny with curly red hair; black jeans fit her long legs like paint. She was all business, asking one question right after another, “Are you sure you don’t want a puppy?” “What was this one doing in the puppy room, anyway?” “Before you decide, don’t you want to see if there’s another one you like better?” Impossible!

The Old Lady was all smiles and “Oh, what a sweetie he is!” and “He’s so cute, just adorable!” But she looked like she could use some cheering up. “I can do that. See, I’m already doing it.” I sat up, then fell over! She laughed and pointed. Kinda sassy Old Lady, cute grin. I think she liked me.
